Can You Stand It? 1

Are you like me? There are so many things that can get me excited when I meditate and think upon my wonderful and awesome God, but there is one thing that easily quickens my heart rapidly and that’s when I study the armor of God.

Think of it with me, this is something He has given to equip us for the many battles we encounter throughout our day. Now sure, some days don’t require as much as others, but isn’t it thrilling to know that He has given us something to enable and acquire the needed victory?

Take a look at Ephesians 6:13-17 NIV. “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.”

I’m probably going to take each item and expound on it because there is a treasure trove of information that needs to be covered here so we are able to know each piece as intimately as a soldier in the armed forces knows theirs.

Can we start at that top? The head is the protector of our vital organ, the brain, also known as Control Center. This is where we make all our decisions from the simplest question of what shall we eat for breakfast to the analyzing of the most complex questions, “Who am I? What do I value? Where is my life going?? “

Let’s talk about involuntary, automatic actions our brain makes for us. Breathing is a great example of this. Did you wake up today thinking, “I better take a breath”, “Breathe in and out and repeat”? Chances are you did not! See the miracle of every breath we take. Studying God’s word should be like this, so automatic and ingrained in our lives that we don’t even have to question if we studied His word today.

It will make you spiritually stronger and prepare your mindset for the day. And yes, I would do this first thing. There is a special sacredness to first fruits. Look to Deuteronomy 26: 9-10, NIV “He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey; and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you Lord have given me.” It’s a tithe. Think of it as a tithe of your life and time. The tithe is important to God because it is showing our trust and reliance on Him to meet our needs. We show this through this small sacrifice.

Can we talk about the voluntary things our mind goes to or does at times? Do we have control of this? Hopefully, you just said a resounding and emphatic, “Yes”! Check out previous posts if you need refreshing. Rest your mind on this one: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phillippians 4:7 NIV That’s a double whammy and is the perfect place to transition and speak of the breastplate of righteousness, another item of our armor.

Hopefully, you have a picture of a knight in your mind and can see that this piece is the protector of another vital organ, the heart. God tells us a great deal about the importance of the heart in Proverbs 4:23 NIV, “Above all else, guard your heat, for everything you do flows from it.” I’ll take some of that! In this world, where everyone doesn’t think before they speak (unfortunately, me also sometimes), we have a lot of people walking around wounded because of someone’s thoughtless comment made out of haste.

The guarding here though is speaking of guarding some of those vital questions that seep down to our inner being (the heart ) such as Who am I? What do I believe? What do I value? This is why studying God’s word is important. He reminds you that you are chosen by Him, set apart for His causes and purposes, beloved. (1Peter2:9, Revelation 1:6, Ephesians 5:8) This is like a breath of fresh air in a polluted atmosphere that is always speaking, “No, you can’t!”, “Who do you think you are?” and “You are not enough!”

Time to use another weapon and this one is defensive. The shield of Faith! This one quenches all the fiery darts the enemy tries to throw your way and let’s face it. “Darts” doesn’t sound strong enough to our senses. Our flesh perceives them as fireballs, torpedoes and bombs! Perhaps if we use the power of declaring God’s word, they do become the smaller, less threatening darts and the power of faith makes them seem to be more like mosquito bites!

What’s happening here is God’s word is transforming and changing our perception. Hebrews 11:1 NIV “Now faith is the confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” and “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

Now, I get as excited as the next person when talking about swords and shields, but I don’t want you to miss the greatest weapon that I feel the Lord wants me to point out in this post. It’s not even listed as a weapon or part of our armor, but I believe it is so vital that I can’t end this post without talking about the Stand.

You might have missed it, thought it was an insignificant part of the verse. Don’t feel bad, just resolve yourself to get informed and let the Lord lead you. Look how much it’s mentioned beginning in Ephesians 4:10,11 NIV Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the FULL armor of God, so that you can take your STAND against the devil’s schemes.” and continuing in verse 12 with, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to STAND your ground, and after you have done everything, to STAND.

There is strength that comes when you choose to stand and not bow down to the lies, imaginings and false ideas the enemy tries to get you to believe. 2Corinthians 10:3-5 KJV “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

I’m encouraging you to see yourself as the sentry on the wall protecting your loved ones, yourself and those in your circles of influence through the power of prayer. See yourself not launching small insignificant darts, but the torpedoes, bombs and fireballs mentioned before hitting your target. What is that? The enemy of our souls who has been defeated already. He is merely masquerading as a victor on this earth and the Lord promises that his time is almost up.

  1. This touched me today. Thank you for sharing ! We all need to be reminded to put on our Armor , to think pure and true thoughts, and to stand against evil in all its scheming ways. Especially good to hear on a Monday, or a first day of school! Lord, help us to have the wisdom to know, that we KNOW ,which thoughts, imaginations, and confusing ideas crowding our minds are from Satan and which urgings, promptings, and encouragements are true and coming from You. Give us the ability to discern truth from deceit. In Jesus Name, Amen.

    1. Thanks for responding Dawn and being transparent. I’m sure we all could step it up a bit! Could I also change your comment of “my godliness” to my wanna learn everything I can!

Forever inspired by Matthew 7:7! “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
